Zero Motorcycles reveals longer range, longer lasting 2012 lineup (video)

Zero Motorcycles 2012 Lineup
Zero Motorcycles is gearing up for 2012, and not by stockpiling canned goods and ammunition. The company is refreshing its line of all-electric bikes and adding a host of refinements, including a new powertrain and a battery pack rated to last as long as the motorcycle does (though, whether or not it lives up to that lofty claim in real-world conditions remains to be seen). Of particular interest is the 9kWh configuration of the Zero S, which has an estimated range of 114 miles -- making it the first EV bike available to consumers that can exceed 100 miles on a single charge. In total Zero will be shipping five models in February, starting at $7,695 for the XU, while the S and DS will fetch $11,495 or $13,995 in their respective 6kWh and 9kWh versions. Off-road enthusiasts can choose between the trail shredding Zero X at $9,995 or the motocross-minded Zero MX for $9,495. Check out the gallery below and the video after the break for peek at the company's 2012 line.

Rappers take to mic in Oakland Occupy protest

(AP) ? Hip hop heavyweights known as much for their fiery political lyrics as for their bass-pounding beats have been among the thousands marching, tweeting and sharing dinner with protestors in the Occupy Oakland protests in recent weeks.

MC Hammer, Raymond "Boots" Riley of hip hop group The Coup, and local rapper Mistah FAB have become a regular presence at the encampments, taking up bullhorns and staying until dawn even amid clashes with police.

Now, as the far-flung movement challenging the world's economic systems and distribution of wealth gains momentum, the artists say despite their fame, they, too, stand for the 99 percent.

"I'm trying to make a soundtrack out there that rallies people around certain ideas about living in this system into motivation," Riley said. "This movement is only a couple of months old, and if you compare anyone's favorite social change movement they haven't accomplished as much as what's happened already."

Rappers Talib Kweli, Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco also have visited protesters in New York City's Zuccotti Park, and other major cities. But Oakland became a rallying point for Occupy Wall Street demonstrators nationwide after an Iraq War veteran was injured two weeks ago in a tear gas-filled confrontation with riot police.

The working class city's music has long been fused with movements for social change.

The Black Panthers had their own house soul group named the Lumpens, which performed tunes like "Revolution is the Only Solution". Tupac Shakur, who spent time in Oakland, rapped about police brutality after being beaten in a confrontation with local officers, and won his suit against the city.

"There is always a big element of politics that unfolds in Oakland's hip hop scene even if on its surface it seems playful," said Ali Colleen Neff, a former San Francisco Bay area music critic who studies underground music movements at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "Boots and the others know there is power to be gained from this kind of coalition building across ethnic and cultural lines."

Riley was born into a family of radical organizers, and came up in East Oakland. At 14, he joined a communist party and worked as an organizer in housing projects and farmworker communities, but decided to start his musical career after seeing the impact of Public Enemy's anthem "Fight the Power".

As the leader of The Coup, a left-leaning rap group that's been politically active for about two decades, he is accustomed to critiques. Riley's award-winning album "Party Music", was set to be released right after Sept. 11, 2001, with original cover art that depicted him and band mate Pam the Funkstress destroying the Twin Towers, coincidentally shot months before the attacks. The release was delayed while his label prepared new cover art, but not before it was pilloried on conservative talk shows.

Since then, Riley has been named one of the most influential people of the year by Vibe Magazine, written a soundtrack for The Simpsons and formed a new band called the Street Sweeper Social Club with Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine's guitarist who performed before the Manhattan encampment.

Riley said he sees hope in the Occupy Oakland's autonomous structure, and will take his cues from the movement's decentralized decision-making bodies.

"No movement has had total unity of thought and action," he said. "There are people who have a romanticized notion of how things are supposed to work but it's gotta be rough around the edges because that's why we're able to grow."

After thousands of peaceful protestors rallied and danced in the streets on Wednesday, MC Hammer found himself in the middle of a police standoff before a splinter group clashed with authorities, setting fires, spraying graffiti and shattering windows.

"It's tense down here .. I'm lost for words ... I'm (at)occupyoakland," Hammer tweeted, posting pictures of officers forming a barricade. "The people are peaceful .. I'm in the camp and now in the streets."

Mistah FAB, a star in the West Coast hyphy scene, a local hip hop strain, has been bringing his three-year-old daughter to the protests. He said he was sorry to see that the peaceful shutdown of the Port of Oakland ended in broken shop windows.

"I don't agree with tearing down your own stuff, in your own city," said FAB. "Those small business owners work super hard to maintain these things they've built. They're not the one percent."

Those in the movement's trenches say they're glad to see their message has attracted celebrity support, but some financial reinforcements would be nice, too.

"I'm proud that they are participating in the movement, because it's people who all have a vested interest in the image of Oakland," said D'Aunta Lewis, a college student who grew up in East Oakland and has been sleeping at the encampment. "But I say, don't just tweet about it from a distance, buy some tents and show your support."

Justices hear case of American born in Jerusalem

(AP) ? The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in a Jerusalem-born boy's challenge to State Department policy that prevents him from having his passport show he was born in Israel.

Middle Eastern politics and the battle between Congress and the president over foreign policy are at play in the case being argued at the high court Monday. The boy, Menachem Zivotofsky, and his parents, Naomi and Ari, flew in from Israel to attend Monday's Supreme Court arguments.

The Obama administration, like its Republican and Democratic predecessors, says it doesn't want to stir up anger in the Arab world by appearing to take a position on the ultimate fate of Jerusalem. Longstanding U.S. policy says the status of the city that is important to Jews, Muslims and Christians should be resolved in negotiations.

But lawyers for 9-year-old Menachem argue that the foreign policy concerns are trivial. Thirty-nine lawmakers from both parties are siding with the boy and his parents, defending a provision in a 2002 law that allows Israel to be listed as the birthplace for Americans born in Jerusalem.

President George W. Bush signed the much larger law, but said the provision on Jerusalem interfered with his power over foreign affairs, including the authority to recognize foreign states. Bush issued a signing statement at the time in which he said that "U.S. policy regarding Jerusalem has not changed."

Israel has proclaimed the once-divided city as its capital; the U.S. and most nations do not recognize Jerusalem as the capital.

Had Menachem been born in Tel Aviv, the State Department would have issued a passport listing his place of birth as Israel. The regular practice for recording the birth of a U.S. citizen abroad is to list the country where it occurred.

But the department's guide tells consular officials, "For a person born in Jerusalem, write Jerusalem as the place of birth in the passport."

In late 2002, Naomi Zivotofsky, Menachem's mother, showed up at the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv to get her baby a U.S. passport, one that listed Israel as his birthplace. After State Department officials refused her request, the family sued.

The Zivotofskys and their supporters at the Supreme Court point out that other federal agencies, including the Defense and Justice Departments, refer in official documents to "Jerusalem, Israel." The legal briefs also note that the hospital where Menachem was born is in west Jerusalem, over which there is no dispute about Israeli sovereignty, except by parties that oppose the nation's existence at all.

The family also says that the State Department has made an exception for U.S citizens born in Taiwan. Their passports may list their place of birth as Taiwan, rather than China.

Federal courts have so far said they have no authority to consider the matter, which they have labeled a political dispute that is best resolved by the other two branches of government without court involvement.

The Supreme Court has asked for argument on that issue, as well as on the substance of the family's plea that the law regarding passports be enforced.

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Puss in Boots Beats New Comedies for #1 Spot

In a surprise upset, the animated comedy Puss in Boots held onto the box office crown thanks to an astonishingly strong hold in the second frame while the competing new comedies Tower Heist and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas debuted in the silver and bronze positions, both performing on the lower end of expectations. The overall marketplace remained slow resulting in the worst gross for the first weekend of November in at least nine years.

Barely shedding any business from its softer-than-anticipated opening last week, the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots grossed a stunning $33M this weekend according to studio estimates making for a scant 3% decline. The low drop was caused by many factors including the opening frame being hurt by snowstorms and Halloween activities, plus strong word-of-mouth that helped the DreamWorks Animation hit pick up lost business now that the pumpkin holiday has passed. Many, including numerous Wall Street analysts, wrote off the $34.1M debut last week since it was one of the lowest bows ever for the animation giant. But DreamWorks and distribution partner Paramount are all smiles as the audience is coming now that it is more available. Puss averaged a remarkable $8,336 from 3,963 locations and saw its ten-day cume climb to a stellar $75.5M.

The Antonio Banderas-voiced film is now on course to reach at least $160M and could even approach the $200M mark if it can continue to show good legs this month. Declines are likely to get bigger next week, though. But still there is Veterans Day on Friday which is always a potent school holiday plus Thanksgiving coming up to help keep the cat going into December. Also the next major direct competitor doesn't debut until November 18 when Warner Bros rolls out its own 3D animal franchise toon Happy Feet Two. 3D screens contributed 48% of the weekend gross for Puss and IMAX helped too. Overseas, it grossed an additional $15M from just four markets upping the early total to $39M with most major territories yet to open. International appeal is sizable and the overseas appetite for 3D toons is huge so a robust global tally is likely by year's end.

Widely expected to debut on top, Universal's final release of the year Tower Heist instead opened in second place with an estimated $25.1M finishing the frame on the low end of industry expectations. The PG-13 pic starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy as leaders of a group trying to rob a wealthy criminal's penthouse averaged a good $7,450 from 3,367 locations. But the first weekend of November kicks off the busy holiday moviegoing season and big star-driven comedies with broad appeal often show more muscle. Produced for $85M, Heist also starred Casey Affleck, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, T?a Leoni, Michael Pe?a, Judd Hirsch, and Gabourey Sidibe with top-dollar filmmakers Brett Ratner and Brian Grazer directing and producing, respectively.

Reviews were mixed but generally upbeat on Tower Heist, but paying customers gave only a CinemaScore grade of B. Females made up 56% of the audience while 62% were 30 and older. Stiller and Murphy have both seen larger debuts with their past comedies and combining the two into one film opened the door to growing the upfront fan base for the film. Heist will now have to hope it can have legs although a mediocre audience grade and a competing mainstream comedy from the always reliable Adam Sandler this Friday (Jack and Jill) will make it tough.

Opening in third place was the second new comedy of the frame - A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas - which collected an estimated $13.1M which fell a bit below expectations. The bow was 12% lower than the $14.9M debut of its predecessor Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay from April 2008. Warner Bros. averaged a mild $4,544 from 2,875 theaters and with most screens offering the extra dimension, the 3D share of the gross was a very high 95%. Reviews were good for Christmas but moviegoers were not as impressed as the R-rated film earned a B grade from opening day patrons, according to CinemaScore. Saturday sales slumped 13% while all other films in the top ten went up by at least 20%. As expected, young men made up the prime audience with 62% being male and 73% being under 35. Young males have become extremely difficult to attract this year and high 3D ticket prices have scared away many potential audiences from films that are not part of a top-level brand like Harry Potter or Transformers. Both of these factors became challenges for Harold & Kumar which was fairly inexpensive to produce with a $20M budget.

The horror threequel Paranormal Activity 3 fell another 53% to an estimated $8.5M putting Paramount at $95.3M after 17 days of play. The low budget chiller is now running 24% ahead of its predecessor from last fall. Fox's sci-fi thriller In Time followed with an estimated $7.7M, down 36%, for a $24.2M ten-day total. The dance remake Footloose remained incredibly strong with its female audience easing a slim 17% to an estimated $4.6M. Paramount has collected $44.8M to date.

Rounding out the top ten were four winners of the oh-so-prestigious Sexiest Man Alive award from People magazine. Hugh Jackman's leggy robot boxing hit Real Steel dipped a mere 29% in its fifth round for a $78.8M cume for Disney. The Johnny Depp flop The Rum Diary continued to be ignored by audiences taking in an estimated $3M, down 42%, giving FilmDistrict a puny $10.4M in ten days. A $15M final seems likely for the rookie distributor which is now going through a reorganization of its executive ranks.

Ocean's Eleven pals George Clooney and Brad Pitt followed with estimates of $2M for The Ides of March and $1.9M for Moneyball. Both Sony titles held up very well with declines of 29% and 20% respectively and now stand at $36.8M and $70.3M.

There was no shortage of activity in the specialty marketplace as numerous films expanded into new cities hoping to become players in this winter's awards race. Paramount's romantic drama Like Crazy widened from four to 16 sites and grossed an estimated $270,000 for a terrific $16,875 in its second weekend of play. Fox Searchlight's Martha Marcy May Marlene expanded from 32 to 98 theaters for an estimated $471,000 and $4,806 average. Totals stand at $448,000 and $1M, respectively with more markets to come.

The Wall Street thriller Margin Call went from 140 to 178 playdates in its third round and grossed an estimated $774,000 for a $4,348 average. Roadside Attractions has taken in $2.6M from the Kevin Spacey-Zachary Quinto pic even though it is also available to audiences at home on VOD and other digital platforms. With Antonio Banderas topping the charts two weeks in a row with his kid-friendly toon, the actor's darker adult drama The Skin I Live In continued to invade more arthouses with an estimated $326,000 from 78 sites for a $4,179 average. The Pedro Almodovar pic from Sony Classics played in 31 locations last weekend and has now banked $1.3M. Big Sony doubled the run of its Shakespeare thriller Anonymous which has fared poorly in the U.S. with an estimated $1.3M from 513 theaters for a dull $2,485 average and $2.7M total.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $102.3M which was down a sharp 26% from last year when Megamind debuted in the top spot with $46M; and off 1% from 2009 when A Christmas Carol opened at number one with $30.1M.

Comments by policymakers at Cannes G20 (Reuters)

CANNES, France (Reuters) ? Following are comments on Thursday by policymakers attending the Group of 20 Summit in Cannes, France, and other euro zone officials, as Europe considered the possibility of Greece leaving the euro.

CHINESE PRESIDENT HU JINTAO

"At this critical moment, the G20 must work to address the key problems, boost market confidence, defuse risks and meet challenges, and promote global economic growth and financial stability.

"We should speed up the adjustment of our respective economic structures and endeavor to achieve fairly balanced growth of the global economy. To keep asking emerging markets to revalue their currencies and reduce exports will not lead to balanced growth. On the contrary, it would only plunge the global economy into a 'balanced recession' and make sustainable growth impossible.

"We should advance the reform of the international monetary system in a steady manner, expand the use of the SDR of the IMF, reform the SDR currency basket, and build an international reserve currency system with stable value, rule-based issuance and manageable supply."

U.S. TREASURY UNDER SECRETARY FOR INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS LAEL BRAINARD

"Currency has been part of these conversations. I think you will see some language in the action plan on that. I think China is recognizing the role of greater exchange rate flexibility in helping to shift to domestic demand. It is one of the one of the most powerful instruments...that Chinese has at its disposal in the near term."

INDIAN PRIME MINISTER MANMOHAN SINGH

"In India, large segments of the financial sector especially banking and insurance is mostly state owned and equity holders and taxpayers are mostly one and the same. In this environment, it is difficult to see why a financial sector tax, which would only raise the cost of capital even further, would be appropriate."

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER

Asked about how the G20 would react if Greece left the euro zone: "Obviously that would be an interesting contingency and we have had some discussion of that. But my expectation is that cooler heads will prevail and the package will be accepted (by Greece) and we'll move forward on that."

EU COMMISSION PRESIDENT JOSE MANUEL BARROSO

"Greece is one of the most economically critical situations a country can find itself in. They are on the brink of bankruptcy ... It's not a time for divisions, but for national unity."

"Our aim is if possible to keep everyone (in the euro zone). It's in our fundamental interest. The markets are very nervous and if a country leaves the euro zone that can give ideas, it's a taboo that is broken."

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT DMITRY MEDVEDEV

"I still hope that the Greek leadership, be that the current government or the coalition government, will have enough moderation to finish this course and finally receive the funds to resolve the massive crisis that hit the Greek economy."

"Our (BRICS) position is such that we need to preserve one of the key reserve currencies. Not only the Europeans, but also Russia and China are interested in the existence of the euro."

FRENCH PRESIDENT NICOLAS SARKOZY

"Most of the talks were devoted to the euro zone."

"The euro is the heart of Europe and Europe is at the heart of French politics. We cannot accept the explosion of the euro, which would be the explosion of Europe. It's perfectly normal that the two founding countries of the euro come to the front line to defend an achievement of our predecessors."

"On Greece, I would simply say that the situation is progressing ... I think I can say that the message directed to the whole of the Greek political class by Germany and France yesterday allowed a new awareness which, if it is confirmed, would be welcomed by everyone.

"The euro implies responsibilities...for all those who participate. There is a solidarity among all its members, but minimum common rules have to be respected. That was the message from the chancellor and me yesterday. I am very happy that there are politicians in Greece who understand this message."

"We have said clearly that we want Greece to stay in the euro, but we cannot wish for this if she does not want it herself."

Earlier, on talks with Obama on a possible global transaction tax: "I think we have a common analysis on how to have the world of finance contribute to resolving today's crisis."

U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

"The most important aspect of our task over the next two days is to resolve the financial crisis here in Europe.

"I agree with President Sarkozy that the EU has made some important steps toward a comprehensive solution, and that would not have happened without Nicolas' leadership.

"But here at the G20 we're going to have to flesh out more of the details about how the plan will be fully and decisively implemented. And we also discussed the situation in Greece and how we can work to resolve that situation as well. The United States will continue to be a partner with the Europeans to resolve these challenges."

WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER BEN RHODES

"The IMF still has a substantial amount of resources to deal with a range of challenges in Europe and around the world. There are no plans for the United States to provide additional resources ... We can't speak of what other countries may do."

ANDREW MACDOUGALL, CHIEF SPOKESMAN FOR CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER:

"Canada does not support the tax (on financial transactions). We have an aid program for (the least developed) nations and we do not need another tax. This is not supported by Canada."

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON

"When the world is in crisis, it's right that you consider boosting the IMF.

"No government has ever lost money by lending money to the IMF. What we wouldn't support is the IMF investing directly in some euro bailout fund. That wouldn't be right and we won't back it."

WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR MICHAEL FROMAN

"The president made clear that he shares the objectives that Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy have in ensuring that the financial sector contributes an appropriate share to the resolution of crisis."

"The administration has proposed one approach to that through the financial crisis responsibility fee. The Europeans have another approach. There is broad consensus between the Europeans that the president met with this morning and ourselves about the ability of each to pursue this in their own way, in whatever way they see to be most effective."

BRITISH G20 OFFICIAL IN CANNES, ANONYMOUSLY

"There's a boost to confidence from having a well-resourced IMF. It would be a global boost to confidence that the IMF, if needed, has enough resources. It's not a substitute for the euro zone dealing with its problems."

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT DMITRY MEDVEDEV

"Europe should aid itself, the European Union has everything for that today -- the political authority, the financial resources and the backing of many countries.

"Countries with excessive debt burdens should immediately start fiscal consolidation. Countries in the eurozone that are viewed by the markets as safe havens should support demand and thus facilitate the situation for their weaker partners.

"The reward system of shareholders and managers of financial institution should be changed step by step. Otherwise the 'Occupy Wall street' slogan will become fashionable in all developed countries. And thus instead of dealing with economic growth, everyone will be busy with what has been created."

"I think the long-anticipated entry of Russia into the WTO would be a good contribution to our common cause. It is fruitful to both us and our partners.

"We are ready to accept certain compromise ideas that have been recently worked out with the participation of Switzerland"

SOUTH AFRICAN FINANCE MINISTER PRAVIN GORDHAN

Asked whether BRICS would avoid exposure to the euro zone crisis until Greek issue is resolved: "Yes, that's the idea."

Asked if Greece could leave the euro: "We hope not. We will tell them that it is up to the euro zone members to sort this out."

TURKISH PRIME MINISTER TAYYIP ERDOGAN

"I welcome decisions taken by EU leaders taken at the recent summit but it is very important to implement them as soon as possible to remove the risks we are faced with.

"We still have serious risks and challenges we need to overcome for the future of the global economy, especially in Europe but also elsewhere with high public debt, unemployment and global imbalances. It is important all G20 countries cooperate even more than before.

"The greatest vulnerability threatening the economy is the sustainability of public debt in developed economies.

"It is very important developed countries have concrete and well planned financial policies and that they are implemented. We have seen the importance of that in context of Europe because there have been inconsistent statements made to the public and some of the budgets did not reflect the realities."

JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER YOSHIHIKO NODA

"I expect Europe to steadily implement measures agreed at the European Union summit meeting in order to help stabilize financial systems in Europe."

CHINESE PRESIDENT HU JINTAO

"We have exchanged views on the global economic situation at the BRICS leaders meeting, we discussed the European debt crisis. Now we could exchange opinions on bilateral issues."

"The existing (euro crisis plan) demonstrates the EU's determination to solve the European debt problem and we hope that the implementation of the plan will address current difficulties in Europe and boost European economic development.

"Europe is the world's largest economy, and there won't be global economic recovery without European economic recovery.

"We hope Europe will be fine."

KREMLIN ECONOMIC AIDE ARKADY DVORKOVICH

"BRICS leaders agreed to maintain close contacts between finance ministers and sherpas to work out a common position of BRICS member states on the eurozone.

"BRICS leaders agreed to carry out regular consultations in IMF and other formats."

GREEK FINANCE MINISTER EVANGELOS VENIZELOS

"Greece's position within the euro area is a historic conquest of the country that cannot be put in doubt. This achievement by the Greek people cannot depend on a referendum."

"If we want to protect the country we must, under conditions of national unity and political seriousness and consensus, implement without any delay the decision of October 26 ... as soon as possible."

EURO GROUP PRESIDENT JEAN-CLAUDE JUNCKER

On the prospect of a Greek exit from euro zone, to Germany's ZDF television: "We are working on the subject of how to ensure there is not a disaster for the people in Germany, Luxembourg, the euro zone. We are absolutely prepared for the situation. We are absolutely prepared for the situation which I describe and which I want to be avoided.

"Everything must be done to try to make sure one member of the 17-member group does not fade away but if this were the wish of the Greeks -- and I think that would be wrong -- then we cannot force the Greeks toward their fortune.

"This is not my favored scenario. I would like Greece to stay on board but Greece must fulfill its obligations."
