Virtual Goods Gaming Marketplace Live Gamer Raises $8.5M ...

Live Gamer, an online marketplace for players to trade and buy video game virtual goods, has raised $8.5 million in new funding from Charles River Ventures and Kodiak Venture Partners. This brings Live Gamer?s total funding to nearly $30 million.

Live Gamer?s e-commerce platform powers virtual goods merchandising, analytics, virtual item gifting, support for earned in-game currencies, item storefronts, catalog management, payments gateways, cash-in flows, and more for publishers. Live Gamer has scored a number of other notable partnerships to power micropayments for gaming companies, including a deal with gaming giant EA, THQ Sony, and Real Networks.

The company recently bought video game ad network GamerDNA and engagement advertising platform BrandPort to add advertising capabilities for game publishers. In 2009, the company acquired microtransaction platform Twofish, and Korean startup N-Cash, a global microtransaction company.

Cancer affects about seven million people worldwide, and that number is projected to grow to 15 million by 2020. Most of those patients are treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation, which are often effective but can have debilitating side effects because it's difficult to target tumor tissue.

Nanotechnology, an interdisciplinary research field involving chemistry, engineering, biology, and medicine, has great potential for early detection, accurate diagnosis, and personalized treatment of cancer. Nanoparticles are typically smaller than several hundred nanometers in size, comparable to large biological molecules such as enzymes, receptors, and antibodies. With the size of about one hundred to ten thousand times smaller than human cells, these nanoparticles can offer unprecedented interactions with biomolecules both on the surface of and inside the cells, which may revolutionize cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The development and optimization of near-infrared-absorbing nanoparticles for use as photothermal cancer therapeutic agents has been ongoing. Nanoparticles (35-55nm) provide higher absorption (98% absorption and 2% scattering for gold nanoshells) as well as potentially better tumor penetration. The ability to ablate tumor cells in vitro and efficacy for photothermal cancer therapy clinically tested, and an in vivo model shows significantly increased long-term, tumor-free survival. This nanoparticles has the potential to improve upon photothermal tumor ablation for cancer therapy.

One heat therapy to destroy cancer tumors using nanoparticles is called AuroShell?. The AuroShell? nanoparticles circulate through a patients bloodstream, exiting where the blood vessels are leaking at the site of cancer tumors. Once the nanoparticles accumulate at the tumor the AuroShell? nanoparticles are used to concentrate the heat from infrared light to destroy cancer cells with minimal damage to surrounding healthy cells. 'Hawaii Five-0' cast to aid veterans project (AP)

HONOLULU ? The stars of CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" will be lending a hand off-screen to military school kids at Pearl Harbor.

Actors Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Masi Oka will be among the volunteers Monday helping to plant a garden at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Husband and wife athletes Laird Hamilton and Gabrielle Reece will also be volunteering.

The American Heart Association Teaching Garden will serve as a hands-on way to educate children about the importance of healthy habits.

The project is part of an initiative to support U.S. veterans through community service.

First Lady Michelle Obama, who launched her Joining Forces initiative in April with the vice-president's wife, Jill Biden, will be speaking at the base Monday during a hiring fair for veterans.

OpenSource development is a fun thing to do. You can form the tools for your daily work to your liking. You can make other people happy by fulfilling their wishes. And sometimes you meet the people you work with on a personal level. Those meetings are always a highlight and also a big push forward in development and for motivation.

KDE regularly organizes ?Sprints? so that people can meet. Real-world meetings use real-world money, though. So sponsorships and donations are welcome. Currently the German bank DiBaDu offers sponsorship for the most voted 1000 associations.
