iSlayTheDragon | Board Games, Board Game Reviews, and a ...

This past weekend was Memorial Day Weekend, a time for remembering those who fought in our country's wars and did not come home.? Pushing past all the hype, the free day off of work, and the excited commercialism, most of us celebrate the day by spending time with our families.? And spending time with family is a great time to bring out the board games.

Anyways, I had a pretty game-filled weekend, so why not a little recap, starting all the way back last thursday??

?Thursday
Takenoko: Having a good friend over for dinner, we pulled out Takenoko.? We've reviewed the game already but, you know, that's okay.? Takenoko is a very colorful, friendly game with little spite.? Although there can be occassional accidental spite when your wife suddenly (and inadvertantly) targets 2 tiles you've been trying to set up for a big score and ruins everything you've been working towards.? Also there is a fat panda.

Anyways, there are a couple rules I missed in previous iterations - first in the way the Gardener grows bamboo (he grows it in adjacent tiles of matching color, not just his own), second in how garden-tile-point-cards are scored (all tiles in the arrangement must be irrigated).? When you have all the rules it certainly makes every element all the more important and a lot more irrigation happens.? The game ended with a tie between my wife and I and a close second by our friend Blake.

Dominion:Not every Dominion setup results in the greatest game ever.? We had a lot of interesting cards in play from almost every expansion, as well as the Colony and Platinum from Prosperity, but there wasn't a whole lot in there to draw cards and thus the game bogged down and ended up going pretty slowly.? Oh also there was the Mountebank, which proved especially effective.? I spent a lot of time utilizing my Cartographers (I had waaaay too many) to set up my deck for use of the Native Village, as well as effective use of the Wishing Well (the only way to draw more than 1 card at a time).? Finally I had a decent enough Native Village collection and I launched an epic turn to score 3 Colonies at once, and score a few points from Goons as well.? After that it was just a matter of buying out two more Supply piles that were short in... supply... to end the game, because we just couldn't get good hands to knock out provinces and colonies fast enough.? It was a ridiculous game, and a little too slow for my tastes.? Fortunately that sort of arrangement is very very rare.

Friday
Friday we finally got Battlestar Galactica to the table, with its freshly painted minis courtesy of my good buddy Blake.? I think they turned out pretty sweet, especially considering how tiny those minis are. Here's a few pictures:

Anyways, I haven't played Battlestar Galactica as much as I would like, so I was super excited to get it back on the table again.? I love the tense feeling of paranoia as you struggle to survive.? Of course this time, I was a Cylon from the start, so the paranoia was that someone would figure it out and I'd get screwed.

We played with a full compliment of 6 players, and the game got started off a little slow - the Admiral played a card on his first turn that forced the President's hand and she ended up in the brig right away.? After that those two were totally against each other, and the President was stuck in the brig the whole time, so not as much could be accomplished.? It also let me sit back and let them fight each other while I did what I could to help out the situation and seem more innocent.

But my wife was playing, and she had a strong suspicion that I was a Cylon.? Fortunately, too many people were in the brig already and I managed to stay out of the brig when people decided that it would not be productive if the entire crew were imprisoned.? I lasted long enough to reach the halfway point of the game, and I also intentionally held back my sabotage to ensure that everything was just over half full during the sleeper cylon phase? (For those who haven't played... there are 2 "you are a cylon" loyalty cards, but only half the loyalty cards are dealt out at the start of the game. Halfway through the game, the other half is dealt out.? This means that at the start of the game, there could be 0, 1, or 2 Cylons, and at the halfway point there's a good chance a previously loyal player will become a Cylon).? One of the Loyalty cards is a "You are a sympathizer" which immediately becomes a Cylon player if the resources are more than half full - otherwise, he/she is automatically human (unless of course the original Loyalty card made them a Cylon).? So, I effectively gained another member on my team, then I revealed myself as a Cylon shortly after that.? About that time there was myself and my wife as the revealed Cylons (she was the sympathizer), 3 crewmembers in the brig, and the last crewmember piloting a viper.?

Of course we somehow managed to drag down each resource equally - we just couldn't hit a resource more than one time in a row.? Still, with half the crew being trapped in the brig and our third Cylon player joining us, they just couldn't pull it together and we wore down their resources until we at last emerged victorious.? I think the Brig element is a great dynamic of the game, as it definitely limits Cylons when they're stuck inside but it hurts if the prisoner is actually human.

Pro tip: try not to throw people in the brig too quickly.?? It'll hurt way more if you keep a human player in the brig than if you don't put in a Cylon right away; and that early you have absolutely no way of knowing.

In the end, the game ran a little long, but it was fun.? And even @Farmerlenny will grudgingly admit he enjoyed himself, despite the FFG logo on the box.

Monday:
We skip ahead to monday, where I spent all day with my family eating food, going mini-golf, and playing games.

Dixit: I've been trying to get this one out with my family for a while now.? I actually borrowed it from @Farmerlenny but the stars have just not aligned.? Fortunately monday was the opportune moment, as we had 7 adults and my sister was feeling sick from her pregnancy, and thus fairly confined to the couch.? We whipped up a couple house rules to make the game work with 7 players (mostly just pen and paper instead of the voting tokens) and got underway.? Though at first people were hesitant about their descriptions, everyone soon got into it and were coming up with some pretty clever stuff.? Everyone had a lot of fun, and I even enjoyed the game more than I expected to.? It was a blast, and now I'll probably have to nab my own copy (perhaps of Dixit Odyssey with enough tokens for 12player).

Ticket to Ride: In a lull, my wife and I pulled out Ticket to Ride for a quick game before dinner.? We decided to mix things up; instead of the standard way of dealing out tickets, we each just grabbed 6 tickets and had to keep all of them.? It was an interesting dynamic; with 6 tickets you're much more likely to get an even mix of long and short routes, but you may not even have enough trains to complete all the routes.? You have to pick and choose your most valuable ones, or work really hard for the most efficient route if you're going to hit them all.? You can't take lengthy detours to score on 6-length routes, and your opponent may take that one shortcut that you need to pull everything together.? It was pretty fun, and we may try that variant again next time we play.

Stuck with a negative attitude? Attracting negative people into your life? This 3 part series gives you 3 fun, fast, and powerful strategies to create an optimistic attitude and to bring positive people into your life. Catch up on Step 1 here: Banish Negativity- Step 1 of 3
?
Step 2. React To Negatives By Giving The Opposite Positive Action.
?
child-monkeyIf you are in the habit of giving out positive thoughts and actions to others and still receive negatives, what do you do? Here it is. Make a note. When you receive an unwarranted negative, immediately give out the opposite to someone else who needs it, in fact give it out to as many people as possible. For example:
  • ?If I receive unfair criticism, I will go out and give praise to anyone who needs an encouraging word.?
  • ?If I am treated in an unfriendly manner, I will go out and be friendly to others who need a friendly word.?
  • ?If I am lied to, I will double my efforts to be truthful with others.?
  • ?If I am ignored, I will go out and listen to those who need a supportive ear.?
  • ?If I am spoken to harshly, I will go out and speak softly to others in need of a gentle word.?

Note that I frequently use the phrase ?go out? in the previous statements. This use makes the point that you must actively go out or seek a person or situation where you can bequeath the opposite of what you were given. Merely thinking it won?t do. To affect the energy systems around you, you must react to negatives by giving the opposite positive action.

Thanks for visiting today. Stop by for the next post,

Westen cursed his luck as he ran outside the blistering rain that sliced through his clothing like a knife. ?the one night I forget to bring an umbrella and it decides to pour?Just my luck?? he thought to himself as he darted under an awning to catch his breath. He looked at the dark sky squinting to see if the rain would lighten up any time soon, but he couldn?t make anything out. With a shake of his head he ran out once more into the rain as the few cars on the narrow street splashed him, not that it made him any wetter, he was already soaked. A flash of lightning made him flinch. Not paying any attention to where he was going he ran straight into someone. ?Oops, Sorry my bad.? He apologized.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Nearly identical in most ways to the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4590 ($499.99 list, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 ($399.99 list) adds Wi-Fi support that the WP-4590 lacks, but leaves out support for the PCL and PostScript printer languages that some offices require. Beyond that, it shares the same fast speed and good paper handling that makes both printers comparable to similarly priced lasers, and it offers the same low cost per page that makes them particularly attractive choices for micro and small offices and workgroups. The WP-4533 in particular is attractive enough to make it Editors' Choice.

Despite the $100 lower price for the WP-4533, it's best thought of as sharing the current top of the line spot for WorkForce Pro models. In essence, the WP-4590 is top of the line for offices that need PCL or PostScript in their printers, while the WP-4533 is top of the line for those that don't. Both printers, for example, offer identical MFP features. Both print, scan, and fax, including over a network; they both work as standalone copiers and fax machines; and both can scan to, but not print from, a USB key.

As with the WP-4590 also, the WP-4533 lets you print through the cloud. Connect to the Internet by way of a network, using either an Ethernet or WiFi connection in this case, and you can take advantage of Epson Connect Email Print, which assigns an email address to the printer, then lets you print a document by sending it as an email attachment.

Similarly, you can also print with Google Cloud Print and even print with Apple AirPrint if you have a WiFi access point on your network. (You can't connect directly to the printer with AirPrint). You won't find any mention of these two options in the material that comes with the printer, however. To find out how to use either choice, you have to go to Epson's Web site.

Paper Handling and Setup
The WP-4533's paper handling is better than you'll get with most similarly priced color laser MFPs. The 330 sheet paper capacity, divided into a 250-sheet drawer and 80-sheet multi-purpose tray, should be more than enough for most small offices, and the built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) is a welcome convenience. If you need more capacity, you can even add a second 250-sheet drawer ($99.99 list) for a total of 580 sheets.

For scanning, the WP-4533 offers a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to supplement the letter-size flatbed. The ADF can scan legal-size pages as well as multipage documents, which is typical, but it also goes beyond that, adding the ability to scan in duplex by turning the page over when it scans. The duplexing options lets you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies.

Setup is absolutely standard fare. For my tests, I connected the WP-4533 by its Ethernet port and installed the driver and software on a Windows Vista system. The only potential issue is the size, since the paper handing capabilities require a relative large printer for an inkjet, at 15.1 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD).

Although that makes the printer a little large to comfortably share a desk with, and arguably a little large for most home offices, it's small enough so it should be an easy fit for a micro or small office. Also worth mention is that it weighs only 30.4 pounds, which makes it much lighter and easier to move around than comparable lasers.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Speed and Output Quality
On our business applications I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software), at an effective 6.0 pages per minute (ppm). Not surprisingly, that makes it essentially tied with the WP-4590, at 5.7 ppm using the Epson driver. (At these speeds, a 0.3 ppm isn't statistically significant.) It's also essentially tied with the Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct, 4.5 stars) and faster than the comparably priced color laser Editors' choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer ($419.99 direct, 4 stars), which managed only 4.5 ppm.

As with the WP-4590, output quality is the only area where the WP-4533 behaves more like a typical inkjet than like a laser. Text quality is at the low end of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, which makes it good enough for most business purposes. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you shouldn't have any complaints about it.

Graphics is absolutely par for an inkjet, which also makes it makes it good enough for any business needs, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on how critical an eye you have, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is at the upper end of the small range where the vast majority of inkjet MFPs fall, making it better than what you'd get with some drugstore prints and a lot better than you'll get from a color laser. For those businesses, like real estate offices, that need to print photos, that can be a welcome plus.

One other strong argument for the WP-4533 is its low cost per page. Based on ink cost and claimed yields for the cartridges, the running cost comes out to 1.6 cents for a monochrome page and 6.8 cents for a color page. That makes the WP-4533, along with WP-4590, one of the least expensive printers in this price range to print with. And that includes lasers as well as inkjets.

As I said about the WP-4590, the WP-4533 is one of the more impressive inkjets we've tested. Its speed, paper handling, and MFP features are all a match for comparably priced?and even more expensive?laser MFPs, and it offers everything a small office needs, including some notable extras like cloud printing. Clearly, if you must have PostScript or PCL, the WP-4590 will be your preferred choice. For the larger number of small offices that don't, however, the WP-4533 offers all the same capabilities plus WiFi at a lower price.

More generally, if you must have laser-quality text, you should also look at the Dell 1355cnw; and if you can benefit from a legal-size flatbed, you should look at the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. However, the low cost per page for the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 is enough to make it Editors' Choice also, along with both of those printers. And the more you print, the more you'll appreciate the savings.

Thunder may have to ugly it up to beat Spurs

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Gregg Popovich implored his San Antonio Spurs to get nasty to take control of the Western Conference finals.

The Oklahoma City Thunder may just have to get ugly if they hope to make it a series.

The Thunder have struggled to corral a San Antonio offense that is clicking on all cylinders during a 20-game winning streak, the longest any NBA team has been able to maintain into the playoffs.

Oklahoma City is in an 0-2 hole as the series shifts to the Chesapeake Energy Arena for Game 3 on Thursday night. Maybe ? just maybe ? the Thunder found something that works while trying to rally from a 22-point, third-quarter deficit in Game 2.

They toughened up, turned it into a more physical contest and the NBA's best free-throw shooting team had both teams marching to the foul line as the lead shrank to six. The Spurs were able to close it out for a 120-111 victory.

"We're a physical team. We have to play that way," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said Wednesday. "If we play free-flowing basketball, we can beat some teams but we're not at our best if we're not being physical on the defensive end.

"Even on offense, we're a physical team. We're aggressive, we set great screens, we set up our screens and we attack the basket, we have dribble penetration and we're looking for extra shooters. That's when we're at our best."

So far, the Spurs have been at their best more than the Thunder, cranking it up for 39 fourth-quarter points in a come-from-behind Game 1 victory and then shooting 63 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range while building their biggest lead in Game 2.

That had Brooks in a rare position, questioning whether his team was playing its hardest and specifically noting that defense on 3-point attempts wasn't good enough.

"We have to play with maximum effort every possession and the entire possession. If you don't do that, you give them so many open looks because they're the best passing team in the game," Brooks said. "They don't hesitate. They make the plays for each other and they make them consistently and they make them quickly and on time. With that being said, you can have great defense and they still make some tough shots."

The Thunder held a team meeting to regroup and try to find a way to become the 15th team in NBA history to rally back from a 0-2 deficit in a seven-game series.

"We're not down on ourselves," said guard Derek Fisher, a veteran of the Los Angeles Lakers' 2004 comeback after losing the first two games to a Spurs team also riding a double-digit win streak.

"We're obviously disappointed. We don't like to lose," he said. "But we still feel good about our ability to follow our game plan, do some of the things we need to do, make some adjustments and give ourselves a chance to win Game 3."

It starts with duplicating the rugged approach that disrupted the Spurs' rhythm in Game 2. It materialized after Brooks had his players foul backup center Tiago Splitter intentionally to send a poor free-throw shooter to the line.

Oklahoma City didn't make up any ground while sending Splitter to the line repeatedly, but the whistles kept sounding afterward and the Thunder showed some fight.

"They started to attack, attack, attack ? put your head down and try to draw fouls ? and it worked for them in that fourth quarter," Spurs guard Manu Ginobili said. "And defensively they were everywhere. I don't know if we got a little tired or we kind of stopped playing a little, but they were successful in doing what they wanted in the fourth. We just made a couple of tough shots that gave us some fresh air."

Brooks also questioned how much of the comeback to claim credit for, and how much was San Antonio relaxing after building such a commanding lead.

"If we don't go down 20 and we have that spurt, we're in the lead," Thunder guard James Harden said. "So, we just can't allow a lack of focus." He said there were too many "mini-spurts" where Oklahoma City's lapses let the lead keep ballooning out of control.

No matter what style they try to play, the Thunder already know they can't get by with that lack of mental discipline.

"You can talk about Xs and Os and adjustments and rotations and all those things but at the end of the day, sometimes you just have to want it," Fisher said. "How you define that, how you lay that out as a game plan, I don't know. But when you want it bad enough, you figure it out.

"We have to want it bad enough come tomorrow night in order to figure it out."

How to Choose Gym Equipment

It is advisable to perform any type of exercise to build and maintain your health. People nowadays prefer to exercise indoors in a home gym, instead of joining a health center due to various reasons such as: numerous household tasks, tight work schedules, costly gymnasiums, difficult weather and remote locations.

Selecting the appropriate gym equipment will lead to proper health development; increase body strength, develop core muscles, enhance joint motion and regenerate muscles.

People buy a limited number of exercise equipment just within their budget. Hence choosing and purchasing the right home gym equipment will provide total fitness and a variety of significant benefits to all individuals implementing a fitness plan.

Choosing exercise equipment

Keeping fit is necessary for everyone. There are several types of exercise machines sold in the market today; and it is confusing and difficult to choose the right equipment for customers.

First of all you must understand that you need not replicate a commercial health center in your home. Buy equipment that help to accomplish your health goals; like losing weight, building muscle or staying fit.

Next, decide your budget, as certain exercise equipment maybe costly. You can visit a local store or visit an online store. Lastly, check the available space in your house and buy equipment that fit accordingly.

AP IMPACT: Almost half of new vets seek disability

America's newest veterans are filing for disability benefits at a historic rate, claiming to be the most medically and mentally troubled generation of former troops the nation has ever seen.

A staggering 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries they say are service-related. That is more than double the estimate of 21 percent who filed such claims after the Gulf War in the early 1990s, top government officials told The Associated Press.

What's more, these new veterans are claiming eight to nine ailments on average, and the most recent ones over the last year are claiming 11 to 14. By comparison, Vietnam veterans are currently receiving compensation for fewer than four, on average, and those from World War II and Korea, just two.

It's unclear how much worse off these new veterans are than their predecessors. Many factors are driving the dramatic increase in claims ? the weak economy, more troops surviving wounds, and more awareness of problems such as concussions and PTSD. Almost one-third have been granted disability so far.

Government officials and some veterans' advocates say that veterans who might have been able to work with certain disabilities may be more inclined to seek benefits now because they lost jobs or can't find any. Aggressive outreach and advocacy efforts also have brought more veterans into the system, which must evaluate each claim to see if it is war-related. Payments range from $127 a month for a 10 percent disability to $2,769 for a full one.

As the nation commemorates the more than 6,400 troops who died in post-9/11 wars, the problems of those who survived also draw attention. These new veterans are seeking a level of help the government did not anticipate, and for which there is no special fund set aside to pay.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is mired in backlogged claims, but "our mission is to take care of whatever the population is," said Allison Hickey, the VA's undersecretary for benefits. "We want them to have what their entitlement is."

The 21 percent who filed claims in previous wars is Hickey's estimate of an average for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. The VA has details only on the current disability claims being paid to veterans of each war.

The AP spent three months reviewing records and talking with doctors, government officials and former troops to take stock of the new veterans. They are different in many ways from those who fought before them.

More are from the Reserves and National Guard ? 28 percent of those filing disability claims ? rather than career military. Reserves and National Guard made up a greater percentage of troops in these wars than they did in previous ones. About 31 percent of Guard/Reserve new veterans have filed claims compared to 56 percent of career military ones.

More of the new veterans are women, accounting for 12 percent of those who have sought care through the VA. Women also served in greater numbers in these wars than in the past. Some female veterans are claiming PTSD due to military sexual trauma ? a new challenge from a disability rating standpoint, Hickey said.

The new veterans have different types of injuries than previous veterans did. That's partly because improvised bombs have been the main weapon and because body armor and improved battlefield care allowed many of them to survive wounds that in past wars proved fatal.

"They're being kept alive at unprecedented rates," said Dr. David Cifu, the VA's medical rehabilitation chief. More than 95 percent of troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan have survived.

Larry Bailey II is an example. After tripping a rooftop bomb in Afghanistan last June, the 26-year-old Marine remembers flying into the air, then fellow troops attending to him.

"I pretty much knew that my legs were gone. My left hand, from what I remember I still had three fingers on it," although they didn't seem right, Bailey said. "I looked a few times but then they told me to stop looking." Bailey, who is from Zion, Ill., north of Chicago, ended up a triple amputee and expects to get a hand transplant this summer.

He is still transitioning from active duty and is not yet a veteran. Just over half of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans eligible for VA care have used it so far.

Of those who have sought VA care:

?More than 1,600 of them lost a limb; many others lost fingers or toes.

?At least 156 are blind, and thousands of others have impaired vision.

?More than 177,000 have hearing loss, and more than 350,000 report tinnitus ? noise or ringing in the ears.

?Thousands are disfigured, as many as 200 of them so badly that they may need face transplants. One-quarter of battlefield injuries requiring evacuation included wounds to the face or jaw, one study found.

"The numbers are pretty staggering," said Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who has done four face transplants on non-military patients and expects to start doing them soon on veterans.

Others have invisible wounds. More than 400,000 of these new veterans have been treated by the VA for a mental health problem, most commonly, PTSD.

Tens of thousands of veterans suffered traumatic brain injury, or TBI ? mostly mild concussions from bomb blasts ? and doctors don't know what's in store for them long-term. Cifu, of the VA, said that roughly 20 percent of active duty troops suffered concussions, but only one-third of them have symptoms lasting beyond a few months.

That's still a big number, and "it's very rare that someone has just a single concussion," said David Hovda, director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center. Suffering multiple concussions, or one soon after another, raises the risk of long-term problems. A brain injury also makes the brain more susceptible to PTSD, he said.

On a more mundane level, many new veterans have back, shoulder and knee problems, aggravated by carrying heavy packs and wearing the body armor that helped keep them alive. One recent study found that 19 percent required orthopedic surgery consultations and 4 percent needed surgery after returning from combat.

All of this adds up to more disability claims, which for years have been coming in faster than the government can handle them. The average wait to get a new one processed grows longer each month and is now about eight months ? time that a frustrated, injured veteran might spend with no income.

More than 560,000 veterans from all wars currently have claims that are backlogged ? older than 125 days.

The VA's benefits chief, Hickey, gave these reasons:

?Sheer volume. Disability claims from all veterans soared from 888,000 in 2008 to 1.3 million in 2011. Last year's included more than 230,000 new claims from Vietnam veterans and their survivors because of a change in what conditions can be considered related to Agent Orange exposure. Those complex, 50-year-old cases took more than a third of available staff, she said.

?High number of ailments per claim. When a veteran claims 11 to 14 problems, each one requires "due diligence" ? a medical evaluation and proof that it is service-related, Hickey said.

?A new mandate to handle the oldest cases first. Because these tend to be the most complex, they have monopolized staff and pushed up average processing time on new claims, she said.

?Outmoded systems. The VA is streamlining and going to electronic records, but for now, "We have 4.4 million case files sitting around 56 regional offices that we have to work with; that slows us down significantly," Hickey said.

Barry Jesinoski, executive director of Disabled American Veterans, called Hickey's efforts "commendable," but said: "The VA has a long way to go" to meet veterans' needs. Even before the surge in Agent Orange cases, VA officials "were already at a place that was unacceptable" on backlogged claims, he said.

He and VA officials agree that the economy is motivating some claims. His group helps veterans file them, and he said that sometimes when veterans come in, "We'll say, 'Is your back worse?' and they'll say, 'No, I just lost my job.'"

Jesinoski does believe these veterans have more mental problems, especially from multiple deployments.

"You just can't keep sending people into war five, six or seven times and expect that they're going to come home just fine," he said.

For taxpayers, the ordeal is just beginning. With any war, the cost of caring for veterans rises for several decades and peaks 30 to 40 years later, when diseases of aging are more common, said Harvard economist Linda Bilmes. She estimates the health care and disability costs of the recent wars at $600 billion to $900 billion.

"This is a huge number and there's no money set aside," she said. "Unless we take steps now into some kind of fund that will grow over time, it's very plausible many people will feel we can't afford these benefits we overpromised."

How would that play to these veterans, who all volunteered and now expect the government to keep its end of the bargain?

"The deal was, if you get wounded, we're going to supply this level of support," Bilmes said. Right now, "there's a lot of sympathy and a lot of people want to help. But memories are short and times change."

How Crackpot Egalitarianism Caused the Sub-Prime Mortgage Crisis

By Thomas DiLorenzo

?In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing credit requirements on loans that it will purchase . . . [to] encourage . . . banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good . . . . Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk.?

New York Times, September 30, 1999

The main cause of the current economic crisis is the boom-and-bust cycle that was caused by the Greenspan Fed. Years of artificially-lowered interest rates caused trillions of dollars in mal-investment in real estate and other industries, and now we must endure the bust. But crackpot egalitarianism within the Fed and, indeed, in the entire Washington establishment, has made the crisis infinitely worse.

In the early 1990s the Boston Fed did all that it could to fabricate ?evidence? of widespread lending discrimination against racial minorities. But when Peter Brimelow and Leslie Spencer of Forbes magazine asked Boston Fed official Alicia Munnel what evidence of discrimination she really had, she was forced to admit that she had none.

Fighting discrimination was not the Fed?s real goal. The real goal was to achieve a more ?egalitarian distribution? of housing, period. So under the phony guise of ?fighting discrimination? the Fed, the Congress, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and myriad other federal government agencies forced, bribed, and extorted mortgage lenders of all kinds into making literally trillions of dollars in bad loans to unqualified borrowers. Countrywide Bank alone was praised by the Fed for making $600 billion in such loans (shortly before it went bankrupt).

The Fed?s ?smoking gun? in this entire charade is a Boston Fed publication entitled ?Closing the Gap: A Guide to Equal Opportunity Lending.? There is a gap, you see, between the value of real estate owned by middle- and upper-income Americans on the one hand, and lower-income Americans on the other. (There is also a luxury automobile gap, a two-week European vacation gap, a luxury boat gap, an expensive suit gap, and many others). The federal government has used all of its powers of threats, force, and intimidation over the past two decades to try to close the housing ?gap.? ?The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston wants to be helpful to lenders as they work to close the mortgage gap,? the publication states.

In addition to closing the ?mortgage gap,? the Fed also pressured lenders to adopt a more vigorous racial hiring quota system, presumably under the theory that minority loan officers would be more likely to acquiesce in the Fed?s dictates to make more mortgage loans to its political mascots, sub-prime borrowers.

The Boston Fed report claims that it is only offering lenders ?guidelines,? and ?suggestions,? but it is very clear that failure to obey the Fed?s ?guidelines? can lead to serious financial problems for any mortgage lender. The report states in bold type that ?Failure to comply with the Equal Credit Opportunity Act or Regulation B can subject a financial institution to civil liability for actual and punitive damages in individual or class actions. Liability for punitive damages can be as much as $10,000 in individual actions and the lesser of $500,000 or 1 percent of the creditor?s net worth in class actions.?

All lenders ? banks, independent mortgage companies, etc. ? were told that they needed to pay close attention to ?such laws and regulations as the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (Regulation B), the Fair Housing Act, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (Regulation C), and the Community Reinvestment Act.? A ?conscientious [bank] Board will recognize the potential liability associated with noncompliance . . .? Ah, the subtle power of suggestion.

The Fed instructed lenders to ignore traditional measures of creditworthiness when it came to ?minority and low-income consumers.? Traditional underwriting standards were said to contain ?arbitrary or unreasonable measures of creditworthiness.? ?Special standards? that ?are appropriate to the economic culture of urban, lower-income, and non-traditional consumers? were urged. For example, traditional underwriting standards take into consideration such things as age, location, and condition of a house, but these should be abandoned when it comes to sub-prime borrowers, said the Fed.

Traditional ratios of mortgage payments to monthly income can also be ignored, said the Fed. And besides, ?the secondary market [i.e., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac] is willing to consider ratios above the standard? ones for other borrowers. ?Lack of credit history? should not be a factor either. ?Successful participation in credit counseling? was said to be an adequate substitute.

Lenders were repeatedly urged to ?work with special secondary mortgage market programs? such as those administered by Fannie and Freddie. Lenders were told to ?be aware that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have issued statements to the effect that they understand urban areas require different appraisal methods.? If a sub-prime borrower has a property appraisal problem, then the Fed or Fannie Mae could help to find ?another experienced appraiser? who would presumably see to it that the property was ?correctly? reappraised so that the sub-prime loan could be made. Yours truly was always under the impression that shopping around for ?the right? appraiser who would give you the number you wanted (for a fee) was fraudulent and illegal. Silly me.

In sum, the Fed?s policy of housing market socialism (endorsed and supplemented by numerous federal laws and regulations), combined with the boom-and-bust cycle that it created, has been an unmitigated economic catastrophe for the entire world. Naturally, the Fed?s response has been to grant itself even more powers, while the executive branch and Congress are busy nationalizing the capital markets, a move that will kill American capitalism. Abolishing the Fed would be a very modest first step in dismantling our rotten Leviathan state so that the next generation can at least have some hope of living in a reasonably free and prosperous society.

U.S. criticizes Israel's treatment of African migrants in human rights report

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton presented on Thursday the State Department's 2011 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices that criticizes Israel for its treatment of African migrants, an issue vigorously debated in Israeli public discourse lately.

The report states that Sudanese and Eritrean asylum seekers, which are about 85 percent of African migrants in Israel "were not allowed access to asylum procedures but were given renewable 'conditional release' documents that deferred deportation and had to be renewed every few months."

The report quotes statistics provided by the UNHCR, showing that during the year out of 4,603 new asylum applications 3,692 were rejected. Only one was approved. 6,412 cases remained pending at year?s end.

The report also critically mentioned that the Israeli government officials "often negatively referred to asylum seekers as 'infiltrators' and periodically characterized asylum seekers as directly associated with rises in crime, disease, and terrorism."
The report specifically mentions December 2011 interview of the Minister of Interior Eli Yishai with the IDF radio, in which he promised to "ensure that the last of the Sudanese, and the Eritreans, and all of the infiltrators, to the last of them, will return to their countries.?

The report also referred to criticism by NGO's of "the lack of medical treatment upon arrival for asylum seekers who had been abused, raped, and tortured in Egypt" and the petition filed by one of NGO's in the Be?er Sheva District Court "regarding the segregation of children of asylum seekers in the city of Eilat, who were not accepted into the school system but forced to study in a makeshift school outside of Eilat?s municipal boundary."

Meanwhile, the Anti-Defamation League expressed "serious concern" on Thursday following the violent protest against African migrants in southern Tel-Aviv. Abraham Foxman, ADL National Director, said in a statement that "while we recognize the complexity involved in properly addressing this issue, and sympathize with Israeli citizens whose personal security has been compromised by the lawlessness and violence of some migrants, we are disturbed by inflammatory public statements made by certain Israeli officials, some of which has veered into racism. These statements are counterproductive and only serve to further inflame tensions."

Foxman called on all parties "to work to calm the tensions" and commended Prime Minister Netanyahu for his condemnation of the inflammatory comments by the members of Knesset that took part in the demonstration, and "his commitment to resolving this crisis responsibly."

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs President Rabbi Steve Gutow said Israeli authorities "must see that this vulnerable population, some of whom were forced from their homes by politically and racially motivated persecution, is fully protected." Recognizing the challenge the constant flow of migrants poses to Israel, Gutow said that it's "never an excuse for violence and bigotry. We hope and expect that the authorities will take effective measures to protect this population from further violence and that legitimate requests by refugees to remain in Israel based on fear of persecution in their home countries will be considered humanely and with due process taking into account internationally accepted norms."

JCPA Chair Larry Gold added: "We join with Prime Minister Netanyahu and others in condemning the violence and xenophobic statements from some political quarters."

John Travolta's Difficult Week: Another Sexual Harassment Claim

Actor's lawyer vehemently denies all three claims that have been made so far.
By Gil Kaufman

After two anonymous male masseurs came forward with claims alleging that John Travolta assaulted and sexually harassed them during rub downs, another man has come forward with a similar story.

The third alleged victim, the first to be publicly named, is Chilean cruise ship employee Fabian Zanzi, who, according to reports, says that Travolta accosted him in 2009 while he was working as a VIP liaison on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

Zanzi told ABC.es that Travolta allegedly offered him $12,000 to have sex, but that he spurned the "Pulp Fiction" star's advances. "He hugged me and asked me to do a massage," Zanzi said. The cruise ship worker has reportedly filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Travolta, but no evidence of that suit had emerged at press time.

The latest allegation capped a difficult week for the married star, who has long battled allegations that he is gay. The two anonymous masseurs filed a $2 million civil lawsuit
against Travolta earlier in the week, which the actor's lawyer tagged as "a complete fiction and fabrication." Speaking on Travolta's behalf, attorney Marty Singer said, "None of the events claimed in the suit ever occurred. The plaintiff, who refuses to give their name, knows that the suit is a baseless lie. It is for that reason that the plaintiff hasn't been identified with a name even though it is required to do so."

Singer went on to say that Travolta, ,58, was not in California on the date when the first claimant -- who has since said he got the date wrong -- said the "Hairspray" actor allegedly made sexual advances towards him during a massage.

On Friday (May 11), Singer also denied the claims by Zanzi, accusing him of "hopping on the bandwagon" in search of "his 15 minutes of fame."

"This individual is simply hopping on the bandwagon to get his 15 minutes of fame by coming up with a story for the first time with something that supposedly happened over three years ago," Singer told the New York Daily News. "Nobody has ever heard from this guy before. No lawyer has contacted us."

Radar Online reported that the Atlanta resort where the second John Doe accuser claims Travolta made sexual advances has been asked to preserve the surveillance tape taken during that time in the event that it becomes evidence in the lawsuit.

Quoting an unidentified source close to the case, the gossip site reported, "The hotel has been notified by the masseur's attorney to preserve the surveillance video of the time when Travolta stayed there ... The surveillance video will be crucial evidence in the case because it shows Travolta going to the spa the next day after it is claimed the incident occurred, looking for the masseur, because he wanted to see him again, which is all detailed in the lawsuit. Travolta was told the masseur wasn't available and he left. The masseur was extremely upset when he left Travolta's room, which would have been captured on the camera in the hallway as well."

The 14-page suit filed by the first alleged victim last Friday in California's U.S. District Court, charges Travolta with assault, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that among other salacious activities, Travolta exposed himself and groped the masseur despite protests during a massage performed in Los Angeles in January 2011.

iCache Geode digital wallet hands-on (video)

Image

The iCache Geode was easily the most impressive use of technology that we saw during CTIA 2012. It's the epitome of how a fantastic tech idea can be translated to real world use in a very classy and clever way. At its heart it is extremely simple: take all your existing credit, debit, and loyalty cards, save them in a secure way and be able to use any of them without actually having the original cards handy. The system is comprised of a housing for the iPhone coupled with an app, an E Ink display on the rear, a fingerprint scanner, the GeoCard, and a magnetic stripe reader that is capable of quickly reading in your card details and saving them. Using the Geode is a two-step process, scan all your cards into the device with an included scanner attachment, then using the iPhone app select your method of payment and the GeoCard in the housing is instantly programmed. Pop the card out, tap it on a solid surface to activate it and spend your money. Loyalty cards are equally easy to use: select one of them in the app and its barcode is written to the E Ink display on the Geode's rear surface.

Of course iCache has considered the security implications and has addressed them a few different ways. The iPhone doesn't store any of your card details as they're kept in the housing itself, on launch the app does a hardware check to be sure nothing's been tampered with, asks for a fingerprint scan, and the card programming only lasts for a user-defined period of time after you've tapped it on the table. Click on through for a video demo of the whole ride.
