Clinton presses on with Israel-Hamas truce efforts

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The U.S. secretary of state is pressing on with efforts to wring an elusive deal from Israel and Gaza's militant Hamas rulers to halt the latest violence convulsing the region.

Hillary Rodham Clinton heads to the West Bank on Wednesday morning, after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the previous night. She was hastily dispatched to the region to join a high-profile group of world leaders working to stop the fighting.

Clinton has indicated it could take some time to iron out an agreement after more than a week of fighting.

Israeli aircraft pounded Gaza with at least 30 strikes overnight, hitting government ministries, smuggling tunnels, a banker's empty villa and a Hamas-linked media office located two floors above the office of the French news agency, Agence France-Presse.
