Chelmsford finished second in the 30th annual Chelmsford Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Conrad Gym.? Mt. Anthony of Vermont took first in the 16-team field with 291 points and was followed by the Lions with 201.5, Noble of Maine with 149, Salem, N.H. with 128, Exeter, N.H. with 125 and Billerica with 117.
The Lions had two champions.? Griffin Murray won at 106 and James Clasen took the title at 145.? Taking thirds were Tyler Carmoli (113) and Scott McQuade (152).? Jake Ahern (132), Jimmy Barry (138), Ben Milisi (170), Sean Sarault (182), Anthony Lebon (220) and Jake Murry (285) all finished fifth.
Chelmsford 53, Tewksbury 24
Chelmsford traveled to the new Tewksbury High gym last Wednesday night to take on the Redmen.? They earned win number 10 by a score of 53-24.?
The meet opened with Conor Clasen winning at 106 by forfeit.? At 113, Griffin Murray picked up a pin in the second period after almost pining his opponent in the first period.? Tyler Carmoli won a major decision (12-3) at 120.? He was quick in getting to his opponent's legs and was in control throughout the match. Jake Ahern also got a major decision (11-2) at 132 as he too controlled his opponent throughout the contest.? In one of the more interesting contest of the night, freshman David Goodall earned a 16-9 decision.?
?This was a hard-nosed, physical Tewksbury team and our kids responded to the physical challenge,? said Chelmsford High head coach Bruce Rich.?
Goodal's win was a good example.? The Lions registered three pins in a row by Scott McQuad at 152, Adam Civinskas at 160 and Ben Melisi at 170.? Del Driscoll got another pin in the second period of his match at 195.? Jake Murphy added a pin early in his match at 285.?
?Adam Civinskas and Ben Melisi have been consistent for us all year, and Jake Ahern has wrestled tough all year,? Rich said.
Coach Rich recently joined the ranks of scholastic wrestling coaches with 500 or more wins.? The victory over Tewksbury put him at 503.
Boys track
Chelmsford got several top performances at the Boston Holiday Challenge at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday, Dec. 29.
Quinn Cooney, a top sophomore runner, took second in the boys varsity mile in 4:30.? Brian Wilson took sixth in the freshman mile in 5:15.? The 4x800 relay team of Cooney, Dan Nolan, Matt Arseneault and Chris Judge placed third in 8:29.
Joe Maniscalco won the 300 in 36.39 at the MSTCA Holiday Qualifier at the Reggie Lewis Center on Dec. 27.? Connor Brown took eighth in the 300 in 38.17 and the 4x200 relay team took second in 1:34.10.
Boys hockey
The Lions defeated Westford, 4-1, on Saturday night at the Chelmsford Forum.?
Chelmsford took a 1-0 lead in the first period as Tommy Bishop scored with Drew Dawson assisting.? Westford's Jay Drapeau tied the game up at 1-1 on an unassisted goal about half-way through the second period, but Tommy Bishop got his second goal just before the period ended to put the Lions on top 2-1.?
Chelmsford broke the game open in the third period as Drew Dawson got a goal and Mike DeDonato added another to seal the victory. Derek Noble made a number of nice saves in goal.??
?We had to make some changes in our fore checking to counter what Westford was doing offensively,? said Chelmsford High head coach Mike McGrath. ?Defensemen Charles McKelvey and Patrick Couillard, and some of our other young players saw significant playing time and did well.? Mike DeDonato's goal was big for us.?
Archbishop Williams 3, Chelmsford 1
Chelmsford dropped a 3-1 decision to Archbishop Williams in the Cape Cod Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29.? The loss put the Lions at 4-1-1.? Mike DeDonato got the Chelmsford goal with John Fairbanks and Andrew Knightly getting assists.
Girls hockey
Billerica handed Chelmsford a 5-1 defeat at the Chelmsford Forum on Saturday afternoon.? Rachel Bossi scored the Chelmsford goal.
Chelmsford 8, Marblehead 4
Chelmsford picked up an 8-4 win over Marblehead last Wednesday as the Lions scored four goals in the third period to break the game open.? Rachel Bossi scored two goals and picked up two assists.? Taylor Innman added two goals, and Alicia Steeves, Julianne Sheehan, Devon Livingston, and Brianna Raymond scored single goals.? Rachel Hopkins contributed three assists in the team's strong offensive effort.?
Siana Rosado made 20 saves in goal while earning the victory.
Girls basketball
Chelmsford broke into the win column by defeating Medford, 55-34, in Conrad Gym on Friday night.?
Medford led 30-27 at the half as they tossed in four 3-pointers.? The Lions limited Medford to four second-half points, all on foul shots, and scored 28 themselves.? Freshman guard Clare Markey led the scoring with 13 points, 10 in the first half.? Senior Rachel Couto added 10 points.?
?We set a goal of holding Medford to 35 points and we achieved that goal as we played pressure defense throughout the game,? said Chelmsford High head coach Kevin Branco. ?Our press worked well.? Our scoring was balanced too, so it was truly a team win.?? Sophomore MIchaela Shaw had an exceptional night for us as she scored seven points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.?
Boys swimming
Chelmsford defeated North Andover, 98-73, at the Greater Lowell YMCA last Friday.? The win put the Lions at 3-2 and 1-0 in the MVC.?
Chelmsford took first in all three relay events and in seven individual events.? The 200-medley team of Ben Sperry, Chris Danieli, Andrew Majeski and Ethan Eckhoff won in 1:50.59.? Nick Scrivani, Ryan Sullivan, John Phinney and Matt Francisco took third.? Phinney, Andy Sheu, Sean Regan and Danieli won the 200 free relay in 1:38.50, and Sullivan, Mike Totten, Scrivani and Eckhoff took second. Sheu, Sperry, Regan and Majeski took the 400 free relay in 3:37.12, while Derek Dodge, Chris Brown, Totten and Francisco took third.
Andrew Majeski was a double winner.? He took the 50 freestyle in 23.1 and the 500 freestyle in 4:55.62.? Ben Sperry also won two events - the 100 freestyle (55.19) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.47).? Sean Regan won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.84.?
Dan Pires took first in diving with 251.95 points.? Chris Danieli won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.16.? Others with top three finishes included Ryan Sullivan (third, 200 free; second, 100 breaststroke), Chris Danieli (second, 200 IM), Derek Dodge (third, 200 IM), John Phinney (second, 50 free; second, 100 butterfly), Mike Totten (third, 50 free; third, 100 free), Sergei Leary (second, diving), Liam Eckhoff (third, diving), Andy Shue (third, 100 butterfly; second 100 backstroke), Matt Francisco (third 100 back) and Sean Regan (third, 500 free),?
?I was pleased with the improvement of our middle ability swimmers,? said first-year head coach Craig Vitale. ?They had good time drops and should give us more depth.? Our divers continue to be a strong point for use and today they were working on some new dives."
