Reeling from WCW?s talent raids, WWE?s talent roster wasn?t exactly at its pinnacle in the early to mid-1990s. To compensate for its at-times thin lineup of Superstars, WWE took some unorthodox steps to round out its Royal Rumble Matches between 1993 and 1997. In some instances, relative unknowns from overseas were given the rare opportunity to vie for a top slot at WrestleMania. Other times, legendary alumni were invited to compete. Even freelance upstarts from the U.S. independent circuit were given their first (and often last) chance to shine in an international spotlight.

Reacquaint yourself with some of the Royal Rumble Match?s more obscure entrants ? who, outside of the Royal Rumble Match, had barely a cup of coffee in WWE in the 1990s ? and see how close the WWE Universe came to witnessing a WrestleMania XII main event between Bret ?Hit Man? Hart and ?Dangerous? Doug Gilbert.
