3 Uses for a bird cage in home decor

Sometimes, home inspiration can come in the strangest places, like an old trunk, a used suitcase or a vintage bird cage. Bird cages, which are commonly used to house pet birds, can also make incredible statement pieces for home decor! Spruce up a tired table or add vintage glamour to your living room with a rustic, vintage bird cage.

Vintage and rustic bird cages are all the rage at weddings this year because they add a unique and whimsical flair to table settings and entrance tables. However, don't put that bird cage away just because your wedding is over. Follow the same decor principles you did on your big day every day in your home, by adding pizzazz to tables, bookcases and even lighting -- with a bird cage.

As a chandelier

Tired of your boring lighting fixture and want to add some glitz and glamour to your dining room? Take down that tired plastic lamp and hang up a vintage bird cage instead. Design Sponge created a one-of-a-kind DIY vintage bird cage chandelier with just $5 worth of hardware, a beautiful white-painted bird cage and 45 minutes. If you don't have a cage on hand and have a limited budget, this one from Etsy is a mere $55 and won't require any paint work. If your budget is more expansive and you can afford a custom chandelier and people to hang it, this gorgeous and remarkable bird cage chandelier from Restoration Hardware is sure to wow any guests to your home. (It'll just set you back about $3,000.)

As a centerpiece & card holder

Take advantage of the fresh, bright blooms of spring and arrange them inside your vintage bird cage for a one-of-a-kind centerpiece. For a romantic look, remove the flowers and add an array of different size candles. You can also place greenery, fresh herbs or even pine cones for a more rustic, earthy vibe. For a feminine look (perfect for a bridal shower or Easter brunch) tie ribbons around the pillars of the cage and top off with a few fresh blooms.

If your house gets cluttered with mail, letters and cards that you can't toss yet, use a smaller bird cage as a card holder. Not only will this save tons of drawer space, it'll add a fun, vintage and rustic look to your home decor. For more organization, place a tray with partitions in the bottom of the cage so you can stack your mail, letters or cards neatly inside.

As wall art

Instead of hanging one-dimensional art on your walls, hang different-size bird cages instead for a unique 3D look. All you need to create these one-of-a-kind pieces of art are nails, a hammer, various bird cages and some hooks. Just nail the hooks where you'd like the bird cages to go and simply hang the bird cages from the hooks. These make beautiful entryway art pieces and are also perfect for bedrooms or nurseries. Add some flowers (real or silk) or ribbon for some color.

Who said bird cages were just for pets? Create a whimsical garden home by using these cages in your accessorizing.
